I just got a F-100 (1973) and am wondering about my front suspension. Theres these...... metal..... things jammed inthe springs...... don't know what they are..... but there there. I think I should probably replace them. However everything is so rusted together/falling apart im afraid to. My guess is the spring is shot so those were inserted to keep it up. So where do I find new springs? Whats compatable? I would like to keep it as cheap as possible. ($200 truck) so I was thinking taking them off a F-150? old one? thanks -myers
Sounds like they shimmed the springs, probably to correct for sag, and have a last gasp at alignment before they are totally shot. You should be able to get springs nearly anywhere I think. Might have to be ordered though.
The rust doesn't sound too good. If mounts, coil seats, etc are rusted, I'd want to try to find some junker parts to replace if possible. If your springs are gone, you better check the whole front end. Kingpins, bushings, etc. BTW, springs vary even in same truck models for engine size, etc. You wouldn't want to use 6 banger springs under a 460...Using too stout a spring *might* put you out of normal alignment range. But I'm not sure about that. MK
Someday when I know where Kingpins, bushings, mounts, coil seats are, and what they are i'll look at them. I bought this truck to screw around with and learn mechanics..... and ive learned a ton so far but im still clueless. Theres a 302 in the truck so I was thinking that a set of F-150 springs would be good. Tomorrow I will see how much a set of springs will be. Thanks for your help. Im not really restoring this truck, just making it better and more safe/legal to drive. thanks a bunch -myers
