I recently bought a '97 F-Super Duty. It has a custom flatbed with an auxiliary tank welded to it. I noticed lines coming from the back of it, but didn't think too much about it. Ran it down the road about 500 feet on the front fuel tank for the first time, and she died; was white smoke shooting out of the exhaust. Pulled the fuel filter, and it's full of diarrhea water. Discovered that the front fuel tank is tied to the auxiliary tank on top, which apparently leaks rain water.
I am wondering what all needs to be replaced/purged to get her running on the clean fuel in the rear tank. My plan was to drain the fuel bowl, crank the engine until it spits straight go-juice, replace the filter and be on my way. But I really don't want to break s**t.
Gross stuff there! I too would drop the tanks to clean from the inside out. While down replace the rubber pick up and replace the float. I just posted in my rebuild thread about those, they will run about $45 per tank for both.
Really appreciate the feedback. The tank cleaning comes later. I just need to get it running off the clean rear tank again. Ran strong-ish off the rear tank for the 100 miles I drove it.
Would it be safe to keep a hose off the fuel bowl drain while cranking the engine with the old fuel filter installed and something like hard cardboard wrapped around it to not suck water? Or is there a safer way?
I might end up doing that, if the tank itself is corroding. Aside from that, she is running like a champ off the rear tank. Discovered the schrader valve on the regulator, and let it puke a bunch of air and rust through it til it ran crystal green. Also found the source of the truck jerking back past 2500 rpm, budget CPS. We are golden, minus a dead/sticking injector or three.
