PLEASE listen to me- you need to get to a chiropractor, NOW!! Talk to other people so they can refer you to a good one, not one of these quacks that claim they can cure cancer by manipulating your spine. A good chiropractor will also show how to do the proper exercises that will strengthen your back and abdomen muscles, so that it doesn't happen again. This is from someone that suffered with "spasms" for 10 years before I woke up. Let me ask you this: after you have the spasm and you stand up and look in a mirror, is your body all out of kilter? Do you look like you're shaped like the letter "S?" That's weak muscles allowing your spine to slip out of alignment. The pain is excruciating, but you can get rid of it:

GO SEE A CHIRROPRACTOR!!!!!! You'll thank me for it!

My husband broke his back years ago, and still deals with daily pain. His pills do nothing more than take the edge off. One thing you might try is using pillows, lots of them. My husband's throne, aka lazyboy chair is what he primarily sits on. I bought him body pillows and regular ones to put under his thighs. This elevates, and keeps the weight off his back. Trust me, we all fall asleep when we "take over" his chair. Even our 6 year old and doberman.

STRETCHING..........
That is your friend.
Do this everyday and your pain will go away UNLESS it is a critical injury.
Stand in front of your counter top in your kitchen, then raise your leg and put your heel on top of the ctrtop.
Stand straight........you should start to feel the underside of your leg stretch.
Hold for say 30 seconds and do this everyday or so. As you get use to this slowly start moving your head down towards your leg/foot.
The stretch will be felt on the underside of your leg as well as all the way up your back.
What your doing is stretching the muscles and tendons.
I do this without thinking about it and live virtually pain FREE.
I would go get exrays prior.

Matt, I don't know why I didn't include this in my first post, but better late than never right.

My cousing has it even worse than I did, only one thing cured him.

SWIMMING. It worked wonders for him, he tries to spend at least 30 mins in a pool every day. Problem solved. It works all your muscles, especially the back and abs, in a manner in which they are supported by the water.

Weak abdominal muscles are the #1 cause of back pain and spasms.

I'm sure a chiropractor would help, but I'm real leary of those guys, I've heard too many horror stories. I've also heard that they become somewhat addictive, ie, you require continuous treatment.

Might be worth a look if you can find a good one though, 1956's comments about looking all twisted out of shape were right on in both my case and my cousin's.

It's very important to find the RIGHT chiropractor. If they start talking about curing your asthma, or setting up a series of 30-40 visits, LEAVE THEIR OFFICE IMMEDIATELY. These are quacks and should be avoided at all costs. My chiropractor will only see me a second time if the pain doesn't clear up within 48 hours. In the 12 years I've been his patient, I've only had to return for a second visit ONCE. He re-adjusts my spine and I'm fine within 24 hours. Ask people you know and get a referral- DO NOT rely on Yellow Pages ads!
