1971 F100 fuel Problem

I have a 1971 F100 and I was able to pry off the old gas cap that hasn’t been used in a WHILE but in amazing condition. I filled it up with about 2 gallons just to see how it would run and it ran great and then fuel stopped getting to the engine. You can see the fuel filter and I you can see some ugly looking gas. Now my truck won’t start I believe the fuel filter or lines are clogged. Would this gas also affect my engine?

You will have to remove the gas tank and either replace it or get it boiled out. Also blow out the fuel line from the fuel pump back towards the tank. The rubber fuel hoses need to be replaced and the filter. Try to get a 6 gallon outboard tank and connect it to the fuel pump, this will tell if the carburetor also needs device. It probably does because of the time it has been laid up.

the truck has an auxiliary tank so when I switched it over no gas was getting into the fuel filter.

Here is the replacement mid-ship (or AUX) tank I used:

I think it was around $100

Only diff was the vent tube angle. But the hose still attaches fine.

My truck sat in a field for 5 years, so even tho the PO (previous owner) had cleaned the in-cab tank, the aux tank was full of old junk that was tar like on the insides. The sending unit and the gas pick-up tube were sealed solid.

It was a good thing the new tank came with a new sending unit.

Same pic with flash.

I was able to clean the brass float, but I wasted my time.

I'm going to order one of those for my '72. The old tank looks pretty good, but is full of gum and varnish. It'll be a lot easier to just install a new tank than spend hours cleaning the old one. What did you use for a sending unit? Was it somewhat accurate? The reviews on Amazon weren't all that great. It's amazing the range of prices on that tank, from $102 at Rockauto to over $200 at typical local parts stores. With shipping, Partsgeek is the cheapest by a hair.

Originally, the "corrugated paper cartridge fuel filter" fit into a canister that threads onto the pump. Since some people are unaware, they install an in-line fuel filter.

Meanwhile the fuel pump filter is getting more clogged up every day.

The sending unit came with it. But You should call to be sure it's still the same offer.
