So I replaced my steering damper/stabilizer about 4yrs ago and this past weekend I noticed when I hit a slight bump in the road...I think a pavement seam, I felt the wheel bump to the side a little and had to correct. Didn't take much but noticeable. So in checking it out, it looks blown. Damper juices all over the outside,,,kinda greasy.
So...Shouldnt these last longer? I had the truck for 7yrs prior until I replaced the original. The replacement was a Monroe that came with its own bracket that didnt quite fit so I had to tweak the u-botls a little.
Recommendations on a new one without going high end? I dont run her off road hardly at all. Maybe once a year to go hunting but that is just to tow a small camper and side by side in. Otherwise, she gets driven to work about 3 days a week just to keep the fluids going and maybe pickup a bed load of hay about once a month.
She is currently at just over 337K on the clock.
I wish Bilstein was that cheap. The best I can find starts at $91 and goes up from there.
I may just go back to MotorCraft and ignore Monroe as it seems they don't hold up too well.
Stabilizer life varies. It's right out front and takes a beating so environment (road condtions, weather, use) plays a good part in that. I do a lot of off-roading so I burn through them quicker than most I would assume (2-3 years).
Running 285/75-16s on a stock suspension.
I have the stock single stabilizer setup. I usually run a Pro Comp or Rancho stabilizer. I've been happy with both.
Regarding a steering stab, buy the cheapest one you can find, it’s only designed to take the jarring aka road feedback out of the steering wheel. Too many people use the steering stab as a bandaid for worn out steering components. You don’t need an expensive stab.
