Took the ol' girl to the store yesterday and she stalled out (probably due to the rust in the tank clogging something up, those parts are on the way). When I went to start it back up, the starter just spun without engaging.
Today I took off the inspection plate (below, sorry I couldn't seen to get a good angle with the camera) and the bendix looked good, but I saw some metal fillings below it. Hard for me to tell if there was a section of worn out teeth on the flywheel.
Anyway, I spun the engine by hand, about a quarter turn and sure, enough, it started right up then, no problems.
I guess this isn't there worst thing in the world as I need to get the transmission rebuilt anyway. Also... does anyone recognize where the plate I'm holding goes? When I was looking at the starter I found it just laying on top.
Wow, I don't know. It kind of looks like something you screw down over a larger hole where wires come out. The piece in your hand would then bunch the wires into a small enough bundle to fill the notch in the plate.
It sure looks like some sort of access plate. If it's a Dentside part, it must be for highly optioned out trucks because I can't recall seeing it on mine...

Yea, it is a 73 F100 XLT with all the factory options.
The AC stuff is directly above, but I don't see anywhere that plate would go.
There should be a spacer plate dust cover between bell housing an engine block as I don't see yours in picture an some spacers have a small removable inspection plate and being that plate was on top starter maybe possible related to that missing spacer or yours may have been cut as I see the upper portion of spacer in picture but my spacer comes down an covers lower portion of flywheel with an access cover, but thats just a guess as I am unsure
Have someone turn the motor over a complete revolution by hand, (plugs out makes it easier) while you lay under it and insp the complete flywheel. I bet you find an area that the teeth are worn off. Does your truck have a/c? I think that plate goes where the 2 main a/c lines go into the eng compartment box. Look back by the fire wall, above the aft end of the passenger side valve cover. GUESS ????
