Axle code mismatch?

Hi,

Truck: 2006 F150 4x4 5.4L Supercrew - only owner and have had no drive train work done on it.

I'm trying to see if my truck is rated to tow a certain size trailer and to get an accurate number, I need to know my axle ratio. The code on my door sticker is 'B6' and according to posts in this forum, I have a 3.73 limited slip axle. However, I found a chart elsewhere(*) where 'B6' could also mean a 3.55 axle. So I got under my truck to look at the tag on the axle housing which should read '3L73' according to the previous posts. Of course, it was all mangled from taking a rock at some point, but after straightening it out and cleaning it up, I was able to make out "9-75 6F 09". And according to another post from this forum(**), that might be a 3.55 axle from an 86 F250. Now I know they didn't put a 20 year old axle in my brand new truck, but maybe "6F 09" means "3.55". So what do I have?

Thanks for any help,

Dave

Dave, the 9.75 wasn't introduced until '97, so for sure it isn't an '88. The last 4 characters on the tag are the production date code, 6 being the being the year, L being the month, the last 2 are day of the month. Your axle is the original 3.73 9.75" for your truck it looks like.
My '07 SCrew also is a B6 code, my tag reads 3 73 9 75.

B6 was always a 3.73 ratio ....... the 3.55 code was H9.

46fordtruck >> My '07 SCrew also is a B6 code, my tag reads 3 73 9 75.

There's nothing legible to the left of the '9 75' on the tag. I'm guessing the rock completely obliterated it.
Oh well, I'm going with 3.73. Besides, it gets me an extra 1000 pounds of towing on the charts. ;-)

Thanks for the confirmation guys,
Dave

If you are really bored and want remove all doubt, Jack up one tire and place that side on a jack stand so just that tire spins free. Chock the other tires and place the truck in neutral. Place a chalk mark on the lifted tire at the 6 O'clock position on the inside of the tire so you can see it while rotating the driveshaft. Rotate the tire one complete revolution and note how many times the driveshaft rotated. three and a half times means it's a 3.55 and three and three quarters times means it's a 3.73.

Or just take the above advice and know that it is 3.73:1.

This forum is a plethora of great info. From the posts here I was able to learn that the 04 XLT 4x4, which I assumed had 3.55's, in fact has 3.73's.
