I have an 03 6.0 studded and deleted. I have an oil leak somewhere on top of the motor and I want to wash my engine off so finding the leak might possibly be a little easier but with all the sensors scattered about I'm nervous about and dont think that I can just take my garden hose and degreaser and spray the motor down. So what is the safest way that if affordable to wash my engine with out shorting anything out?
Garden hose being low pressure will be the least likely way to force water into the connectors. That being said just stay clear of any connections and the PCM. Down below the Antilock pump NOTE: The glow plug module seems to be one that if not covered always gets wet connectors.
you also have a set of plugs that should be covered and I would also cover the alternator. Be sure to unhook the batteries and then just avoid the places I pointed out. remove all the stuff you
used to protect things and hook the batteries back up. This part is something I do. Start up and let it get up to temp with the hood open to allow any stream to blow out. How ever you do things
the sooner you get it dried the better. The one thing you don't want to do is leave it wet or use a pressure washer.
One other thing to do is after the wash unplug each connector and clean with contact cleaner and then add in some dielectric grease. Just a dab will do it. Too much and it will oozes out and attract dust.
This is also a good time to pull the batteries and clean them with Battery cleaner and neutralizer and dry them off. The stuff at NAPA has an indicator in it. So if you have any acid it turns red and once
everything is neutralized it will be a yellow. The stuff works well and helps keep the batteries in top shape. Dirty batteries will self discharge more than a clean ones.
Also what is the best way to check for a low pressure oil leak is there a way you can do it with air or is it just pretty much fishing around looking for pooling oil while the truck is running?
You use an oil system dye and a black light to look for the glow.
That link should start at about 7:00 in. You wast a diesel oil
additive for your truck.
