Just a Ford guy needing input

Problem: on my past 2010 and current 2012 Escapes : hard bang dropping into low gear when rolling thru a stop sign. Seems the tranny doesn't shift to low until you are all but stopped (1 - 3 mph). Very annoying unless I drive like an old fart, which I am.

My '12 doesn't do that, but I'm an old fart too and I drive like one.
It might not hurt to include what engine / model you have. Maybe others will have more input.
