water/fuel light

hey guys, I have a water in fuel light that keeps coming back. It has a brand new MC filter and new lid. How many times do you have to drain the bowl ? I have drained it about 4-5 times. For good measure I just put in some seafoam in the gas tank. And also some Iso-heet. Is it possible that the sensor has gone bad? Seems like it's working...every time I drain the bowl the light goes away. Any thoughts ?

First make sure you're only using iso-heet NOT HEET, in your DIESEL TANK. Second, are you buying your diesel from a BUSY newer diesel station? What I mean is If you're buying from an older station that doesn't sell much diesel their tanks could be compromised allowing water to seep into the tank either through a leak or condensation. If they don't sell much the fuel could have significant contamination of water and algae. . I'd change stations buy from a truck stop or very busy station. You can also capture the diesel you drain out into a glass jar and let it sit, it will eventually separate and you'll be able to see just how much water you really have in the sample.

yep, I used the ISO made for diesel. The place I went to is a trusted diesel station, in fact my 24ft work trucks fill up there. I bought the truck from a dealer, he said it was most likely the sensor because he could not get it to go off. The old filter was NASTY.

I would use a little manual hand pump and remove all the fuel from the fuel bowl, and clean the bowl out real good. Let that removed fuel sit in a glass, to see if it layers out. That should give you an idea on which way to head.

yes sir, I did that when I installed the new filter

I believe it had 1/4-1/2 tank of bad gas, but there is no way to know for sure. I will collect some samples and see what I got. Right now the light is off, but I just drained the bowl .

ok here is today's drain from the bowl. I believe this is some what good news. Looks like a small amount of contaminated water sitting on the bottom, about 1/4 inch. what do you guys think?

That's what it looks like and it looks like your fuel bowl is doing its job of alerting you to the contamination.

I'll keep draining the bowl when the light comes on. Maybe keep running the ISO-Heet. Time to burn all the old fuel.

I just had my WIF light come on last week... only the second time in 12 years... and it was immediately after filling up the truck at the same high volume truck stop I've been using for nearly 12 years. It must have been a tiny amount of water, though, because the light did not come back on at the next startup, and hasn't come back on since. I did run the truck for over and hour on a short trip after filling up, and then another hour back home, so I must have just sucked the little bit of water out and if there is any water, it has to be below the pickup tube. I'm getting ready to replace the pickup assembly in the next little while, so I'll just let it run as-is until I can make the parts swap and clean out the tank when I get to that point. I might toss in a bottle or two of additive for good measure, too.

I do annual filter changes, so I guess mine gets drained every 8-10K miles right now. Used to be 18-20K miles when I was on the road a lot more.

little update ....light came on again today...drained the fuel bowl. There was about half as much water collected. I think I am slowly making progress. I still have tons of fuel in the tank so I have plenty of driving to do !

Considering, h2o is heavier than d2, id park the truck level for a day or 2. Then with fuel line disconnected at the pump, run a 5/16 line from pump to 5gal jug. Pump it out til .jugs' full. Let jug sit for a day or 2 then skim off the good stuff
