Check this other thread:

The lower rated axle is the Dana 44HD. The higher rated axle is the Dana 50.

If your GVW is less than 8500 lbs, you probably have the D44HD (lower rated axle).

The vehicle certification label (sticker in the driver's door jamb) should show the GVW.

There is a C-Clip on that stubby shaft - you have to pull the diff to get at the C-Clip. In my experience, the u-joint right next to the diff rarely wears out, so I usually leave them alone unless I have other things to do to it like change the fluid, etc.

there is an easy way to tell if you have a Dana 44HD or Dana 50. You can't always tell by GVWR. My f-250 truck is 8600, and a Dana 44HD. I think most trucks that are rated 8700+ have Dana 50s (x-cab).

easy way is: look at the u-joints in the axle. if you can't see any clips holding the bearing caps in (they look like the ones on your drive shaft), you have a Dana 44HD. if there are retaining c-clips, its a Dana 50. the Dana 44HD has half-moon shaped clips on the inside of the yoke.
