Hey all, 2006 f350 with the 5.4 and auto trans. About a week or so ago i noticed a rattling noise from under the truck while in the drive thru. It seems to happen at idle and low rpm and goes away (mostly?) at higher rpm and under load. I have the inspection cover off and the t/c to flex plate bolts are tight (dammit, was hoping for an easy fix). Any clues after listening to it in this video?
I would first start by checking my engine oil (probably very obvious) then I would check my transmission fluid.
After that I would go to my local auto parts store of preference & or online & get a diagnostic stethoscope.
These actually work really quite well, the touch probe will transfer any mechanical vibrations right into the stethoscope.
I don't think this will help if its making the noise with the cover off, but mine was a bent inspection cover due to blasting through deep hard-packed snow.
Those (4) flex plate to TC bolts rarely fail - IIRC 25 to 30 ft lbs of torque and they should last a "lifetime"...............other possibilities in order of likelihood:
(1) Somewhere else --- need further isolation w/steth
(2) TC (not uncommon)
(3) Pilot area where the TC mates up to the crankcase worn
(4) Flex plate (bent, distorted) taping something near starter area, other areas (e.g. foreign mat'l)
