Looked all over for real life experience of ZF5 and 4:30s
I have 00' 250 6.8/ZF5 3:73 ope
Would like more torque here in Colorado carrying a TC AND towing 2-3 ATVs
Thanks
I have a 1999 250 ZF5 6.8l 4wd. When I installed 35 inch tires, I had the gears changed to 4.56. If I were to so it again, I would've gone to 4.88. The 4.56 were a big improvement, but when towing my toy hauler over steep passes I have to go down to third at times. I think with 4.88 I could stay in fourth. After the change I can start in second gear empty which is great
I have stock tires, i think 4:56 would be too deep.
your tires are at least 3" taller than mine,
What's your speed and rpm in 5th?
I'm about 2200 @ 65 mph.
On my 2003 ECSB, I was running the 5.4/ZF6 combo and it had 4.10 gears stock. When I went to 315/75R16 (~34") tires, I re-geared to 4.88 which would have been numerically equivalent to 4.30 gears with the stock tires. It made a significant improvement in towing capabilities without really hurting the fuel mileage and was still quite usable on the highway. I am also in Colorado and I was able to tow a 6,000 pound travel trailer over Kenosha Pass staying reasonably close to the speed limit without difficulty. I would say that with a TC and some ATVs behind your truck you would be very well served by going to the 4.30 gears.
I'm doing a little research on the r&,p , I'm guessing I have the 10.25 or 10.50 ?
from what I understand they're the same internals, but doesn't make sense.
Can you shed a little light on that ?
Thanks again.

The Super Duty trucks had the 10.5 the OBS trucks use the 10.25.
Just to make sure before I order,
in y'all's opinion , I read the 4:30's are a good match but a few guys are saying don't be afraid of the 4:56, what i "think" I'd prefer. As some have said , I'd hate to go through this expense and have regrets about the 4:30s.
i don't want to beat a dead horse but I don't want to mess up either.
Thanks
