Y block starter
For all you Y block guru's out there, here is my situation. I have a C2AE ('62) 292 block that I'm bolting to a '56 (F100) bell housing. I'm using a 10" flywheel ('57 car) and I'm trying to put together a starter for it. I have the bendix drive ('57 car) and a new Carquest #3123S) starter. The starter shaft measures 5 3/16" long. When I install the starter drive it appears that there is only about 1/2" between the gear and the end housing. I'm thinking that that isn't enough. Any thoughts?

Did you post this question down in the y block engine section in the other part of the forums? Are you saying the gear is 1/2in behind the flywheel? As long as it dis-engages from the flywheel after cranking you should be OK. Did you have any trouble with transmission fitment?

It seems that the starter drive is too long for this particular starter shaft. I do believe that I need to change the drive and I'm trying to figure out which one I need. I have 2 part numbers so far, Standard Motor products #SD-595 and SD11.
