All: Any suggestions on how to get new grease/lub into the sealed "cup" at the base of the window crank shaft where it connects to the regulator plate?
Mine had a big clump of dried grease on the outside and the shaft is very stiff when turning.
Thanks for the help. Jeff
Big clump of dried grease? Are you sure about that? They put a lump of butyl sealant on the mechanism before install and that can be a dried lump after 50+ years, but it's not grease as far as I've seen. You might want to take another look at that piece that you think is grease and verify what it is first.
The mechanism is the visible gears. White lithium based grease can help get things working smoothly again if it is possible at all.
Here's the original regulators from my one truck. That lump of black above both is the butyl sealant. They jammed it in there to make a "dam" of sorts so any water that got into the door wouldn't get into the crank mechanism.
I use the white lithium based grease in an aerosol can with the spray tube. It doesn't take a lot and the lithium grease won't rinse off, melt or freeze. I apply it to the gears and in the core shaft area and roll the regulator from one extent to the other a few times and that usually does the trick.
Chad: Thanks very much for the replies.
On reflection, I was mistaken about the clump of what I thought was dried grease, as it did not respond to overnite soaking in paint thinner. It must have been the butyl rubber, hardened after 50+ years.
I also looked again at the crank handle shaft, and I can see from the back side how I can clean & re-grease the gears.
I'll follow your suggestions.
Jeff
Your problem may not be greasing the gears at all. It's possible that the regulator is simply worn out. Check the shaft for wobble and check the stamped steel cup or support, whatever it's called for rust damage and cracks. My driver's side regulator has these problems. Greasing the gears did nothing. I removed the regulator, sprayed it with wd40 and after a couple days, it worked great but I have no illusions, it needs to be replaced.
I took mine apart and cleaned and re-lubed them.. They were pretty ugly inside. All you have to do is drill out the rivets and replace them with #6 screws and nuts. They are basically just a one way friction clutch.
