Just got back from a week long much needed vacation with the camper. The trip was very interesting, lots of swaying issues but not because of my dual cam sway control, that’s been set up for the Ex since I got it and it works well. I’m pretty sure I have a bad u joint or maybe a bad unit bearing. I’m leaning towards the u joint because when I installed new calipers last month, the unit bearings were fine, no play at all. When I turn to the right I hear what sounds like crunching/grinding noises and a shudder. Also the steering wheel shakes from side to side above 55mph. I’m going to bite the bullet and get the Dynatrac free spin kit. The wife and I have plans to go and visit my brother next year in Nebraska, and while we are half way there, we probably will go to Yellowstone. We will be towing our camper so I don’t want any issues while on the road. Anyone else with the Dynatrac kit?
I put the Dynatrac on my years ago because I got tired of breaking the stock locking hubs and failed unit bearings, it is a quality product. serviceable bearings are nice, just make sure to readjust the bearings after the break in period as they loosen up.
Yes, just needs to be readjusted once they break in. No biggy.
Even though bearing maintaince is no fun and why cars nowdays use sealed setups I prefer to do the maintaince chores with the idea I get to do it in the comfort of my own garage rather then fixing a blown up bearing on the side of a road in some remote BFE.
After the first readjust I just check them and my balljoints and TRE’s when I rotate my tires ever other oil change....just part of the routine. I pulled the bearings and hubs, ( I went with the Dynatrac over the warn ) at 50k I pulled them apart to inspect and regrease, they were perfect. For peace of mind I do carry a spare set of bearings and races with me but that just because many of my trips are deep into the deserts of Mexico and southwest. Not many auto parts stores nearby.
The parts are all standard Dana 60 stuff so easy to get otherwise
I don’t mind maintenance at all, I will just add it to the list when I check all the bearings on my trailers in the spring. When I’m traveling I want the peace of mind that I’m not going to break down in the middle of nowhere, but if I do I can fix it. I also will carry extra bearings just in case. If I decide to put on the 20” wheels and tires that my son gave me, this bearing upgrade just makes more sense.
Just got my Ex back tonight. The owner of the 4x4 shop was very impressed with the quality of the Dynatrac parts. He mentioned everything went together smoothly. It drives so much better, right side bearing was crunchy. It drives nice and straight with very little input to keep it in line. So glad I did this, well worth the money to me.
