78 F150 Steering

My 78 F150 Ranger XLT has lots of slack in the steering. I removed and replaced all the steering linkage under the truck. I took the truck down and had the front end aliened. This did not make a huge difference. I still have lots of slack in the steering. I am guessing the steering box is worn out. I was told that some of the slack could be removed by adjustment screw on top of the steering box. I have not tried that yet but is next on the list. I have pics of the steering box and I was told there is two different models for my truck. One for $202.00 and one for $150.00 the way my luck runs I need the $202.00 one and it has a $165.00 core charge too.

does anyone know what all the numbers and letters mean.

1978 F150 Ranger XLT
Thank you for any info on this set up. Tex

Fiddling with that adjustment screw may make the steering feel "tighter" in the short term but in the long term will cause more harm than good through accelerated wear of the parts, and the looseness will return and be worse than before.

Don't buy a gear box from the parts stores, they are junk! Go with either Red-Head or Blue-Top. I recommend Blue-Top but both are quality rebuilds, Blue-Top is cheaper though.

I concur. Red Head or Blue Top gear boxes are the only way to go.

Don't forget to check the RAG joint at the steering shaft above the box. It could be worn out.
I would not be against adjusting the gear box. Put the steering in the straight ahead position and turn the adjustment screw no more than a 1/4 turn clockwise.

Busted nut... er I mean lock washer.

This is what I got the new nut from. Tractor Supply.

Check the lock nut on the pitman arm. Mine was cracked and the nut had loosened so much that the pitman arm just fell off when I removed the nut. This was after the linkage was disconnected that I noticed the play in the arm with no load on it. Swapped in a new grade 8 lock washer and nut and things tightened up considerably.

Mine is a 4wd.
