Is this much steering slop normal?

I have replaced every worn component of my E350s steering, and still have this much slop.

Every part is new Moog, the steering gear is a rebuilt Ford Motorcraft.

I have tried other brands of steering gear, this one has a lot less slop then them, but is this much normal?

It has a slight wonder down the road, I checked with a friend turning it back and forth in the slop, it is all in the gear.

Am I just going to have to cough up the cash for a red head to get the steering really good, not just acceptable?

That much slop is NOT normal. IMO Red Head builds a great steering box. For me it was money well spent since it made a night and day difference.

Also have you checked the steering shaft for any issues?

That's way too much, I have 140k mi on mine w/zero slop. You can adjust the box. (do search in here).

Yep, adjust the box. When I had a new box put in a previous rig the "new reman" from GM had too much play. Techs at the dealer wouldn't adjust. Said they could try another one. Took it to a good front end shop and in 10 min it was as good as new.

I will try adjusting it, but I may just end up going with the red head.
I am trying to decide between that and a 5 star tune, I don't have cash for both.

How much did it cost and what was the turn around time on the red head ?

the steering shaft is good, or as good as one from the OEM gets.
any good after market upgrades on that?

If you have no play in the steering shaft than there is no reason to replace it.

See my post installing a Red Head.

Fix the steering, tuning can wait. You may get there a little slower without the tune, but you may not get there at all with steering like that while towing that much weight...

You should have seen it before the bushings, steering gear, ball joints, tie rods and bearings! it was easily 2x that bad, and I did not feel safe driving it.

The motor craft is still under warranty, I need to get a red head and return the new one i put in it.

Get a Redhead. Took a cue from Monster here and called them up myself. Talked to the owner Harvey Foster. That guy said he had rebuilt over 43,000 gearboxes so you bet I trust him. Excellent customer service, friendly people, family owned business, I couldn't be happier. Now I just need to get the damned thing installed.

I am also going to 4 Wheel Parts tomorrow to get a Skyjacker Dual Steering Stabilizer set up. Mine does not have even an OEM stabilizer, and you can feel the bumps and jerks pretty bad in steering on rough roads. My suspension is also pretty tight.
