How can I tell if my brake booster needs to be replaced? I just bled the brakes and replaced the master cylinder. A refurbished booster from orielly's is about $120.00. The brake pedal will not return when depressed. The brakes work and all of the vacume hoses to the booster are connected. Can I pull one from another truck? or do I need to get a new one? Also the power steering went out would it be wise to get one of these off another truck or a aftermarket one? Thanks for any info
78,
I own two 78s. Both 1/2 tons. I have had to replace the booster in both. The first one, i went to the junkyard and pulled a used one. It was better than mine but eventually i bought a new one and my brake problems were solved for the meantime.
The other one, the pedal would not return. I simply coughed the money and bought a new booster. My brake problems were solved shortly there after.
The simplest solution is to replace it with a new one. Unfortunately brake booster don't grow on trees.
Good Luck,
KingFisher
PS You will have to disconnect the brake linkage form the brake pedal. The pivot pin will most likely be seized. Use a torch to get it loose and a pair of pliers to pull it out. Be patient.
My truck did the same thing with the booster after I bought it and I got it running it woud hold the pedal to the floor and dnot let the truck move. Probaly one of your booster springs are probaly broken. I got mine from advanced for like $70 or so but that was about 6 months ago but I cant rember. But when it comes to brakes dont go cheap buy new stuff because your safety and others safety is in your hands. Also I strongly reccomend using braided flex lines instead of your factory ruber ones its like $80 for a set of them from anywhere that sells lift kits and that will make a world of difference.
