Can anyone tell me if there are California window kits (preferably power) available for 73-79 F-Series trucks? For those who don't know what this is, it eliminates the wing windows on the doors to a one piece window. I need everthing that is required for the conversion. It will save me a ton of time to have a kit.
Man that would be great! I have been thinking about rigging up a home made power window system for my 73, but this would elimenate the pesky whistle that will never go away. As torque said, it would make a good theft deterrent also, but how do I get in now when I lock my keys inside? j/k
Please post if anybody comes up with anything, I'd be all over it.
There are aftermarket "universal" power window adaptors. I have not installed them but I have seen them. Another thing to break, IMO.
These trucks are so easy to open, vent window or none. They are "slim jim" friendly. Even a coat hanger works between the window and door seal. Locked out, keys inside? Don't forget your dip stick as an easy open key!!! I guess a new thread on security would be in order.
I have a spare key on the frame, its just so easy to just pop the vent window open. I have seen the aftermarket kits for power windows, but not one that changes over the window style like pwrtruck1 was saying. That would be slick.
I imagine you could do it yourself, the trick would be finding a peice of glass from a donor as close to the right size as possible, and having it trimmed.
Thanks alot guys, now you've got me trying to map this out! as if I don't have enough unfinished projects already. (how bad do you really need that dishwasher anyway honey?) yikes
Auto glasss is Tempered, which will not allow you to trim after being done.
However, you can have a piece of glass cut, THEN tempered and you will get the effect you want. I'm not sure the stock window regulator will work for this project, though it might. Just don't take it for granted they will work for you.
Yes, the glass is the easy part. It is the regulator (which would be replaced with a power one anyway) the track and the rubber that fits the door correctly is what I am concerned most with. The regulator and the mechanics of it all really wont be that bad, it is just getting the correct fit and seal with new felts and weather stripping! Thanks guys!
It depends on how complicated the cut is and if any holes need to be drilled in the glass (very hard to do).
I custom-made a canopy for a truck once which utilized a frameless rear hatch made out of glass (mimic-ing a Leer canopy). The tinted glass was cut, 4 holes drilled, edges were beveled and tempered for about $300.
But I think the side glass on our trucks is a bit less complicated...
Easiest theft-deterrent I've come across and now use in mine is an ignition cut off switch hidden under the dash. Other than leaving my bull-mastiff in the truck
