I am about to remove the rusty bed on 59 f100 styleside long bed and looking for tips. Anyone have leads on parts, crossmembers, hardware or bed material other than wood?

Thanks

Contact Steven Barfield Xtreme Automotive Norwood North Carolina 704-474-7933 .He makes metal bed floor replacement sections .As far as the flimsy bed cross members I replaced mine by welding in 1x3 square tubing and added a extra in the rear where there always bent in as I see yours is the same .

I purchased a bed from a late 90's super duty and drill out all the spot welds and am using that. The are the same width and the length is going from a long bed donor to a short bed in my 57 so I cut the front to fit accordingly. But mine looks the same as yours...beat!

That is about what I started last week, I bought a 2017 GMC bed with damaged sides and good floor.
Hoping to do the same as you are describing.
How did you cut it?
Any advice or helpful tips are very welcome.

I wonder if you had to drill out all the spot welds?
I would have measured where the cross braces line up from the new bed to your frame and if the floor / cross braces would fall in the right places.
I would then looked into cutting the new floor larger than you needed and your old floor smaller and sneak up on the right size to weld and make them one.

I kind of did that on my 81 flare side as the wood & cross braces were rotted away and to much $$ to put back to stock.
Being I had a parts truck long bed style side metal floor in grate shape floor wise, side crushed in roll over. I used the metal floor in place of the wood and bolted my sides to it.
You could either bolt or weld it and bed line it and you would never tell it was replaced.

BTW the parts truck floor was bed lined and I kept it on will put a quick coat over it to make it look good when the truck is painted.

That's another interesting way to look at it.
I will be putting a spray-in bedliner over the entire bed.

The ford is spot welded down the sides and then across the back and front, which I used a cheap set of step bits on. The final cut to shortened I used a zip disk in a 4.5" angle grinder.

That's really the easiest

Also what technique did you guys use to make sure the bed got back to the same level?
Did you use original crossmembers or the ones on the replacement bed ?

I haven't crossed that bridge yet, but you could use square or rectangular tube to accommodate each area, then use rubber pads to set height.

That was a thought also, I am thinking of using th crossmembers on the new bed floor where possible. I thought maybe notch them out to be as close to height needed and use rubber pads with steel or treated wood to get it right.

Don't use treated wood, it is extremely corrosive to steel.
