I had my 2011 F 150, XTR 4 X 4, 6sp auto tranny, with the 5.0 engine in at the dealership for one of my free oil changes a couple of weeks ago. Along with the oil change they did a service check on about everything. The battery failed it's test, and I was told "be ready to buy a new battery". So after I got home and hooked the truck up to the "Battery tender Jr." I looked over the rest of the inspection paper. It noted that there was "a leak from the power steering." If the power steering is electric, where does it get it's lube oil from? Is it self contained, or fed from the tranny. Any idea what type of oil it requires, or WHERE to refill the PS ? I thought that I would ask the people that know before I talk to the service dept.
Almost as good as my dealer telling me to do a power steering flush. I said go for it, then I asked if they thought I was that stupid. A lot of dealers use pre filled templates based on vehicles and mileage. It's a scummy way to fear monger and upsell services. FYI I was quoted 220.00 to do the service and 350.00 to change the transfercase fluid.
Thanks for the replies. Well when we bought the truck, my wife said that we should buy the extended warranty ( since we didn't know how well it was taken care of). So maybe I'll take it in and tell'em to fix it under the warranty. That should get some attention. I wonder how much a new rack and pinion system would cost them?
