License Plate love.

License Plate love.
Ok, I think I need to finally replace my license plates. It is something I just never think of, but they really are looking bad. Anyone else with ancient tags they never get rid of?
I first got them on a new Ford Escort wagon bought at the dealer in 1992. When I bought a 1 year old 1999 Expedition in 2000, I just transferred the tags. When the Excursion came along in late 2005, I sold the Expedition to my mother for a Dollar and transferred the tags again.
So I have run the same set of tags (NJ requires front and rear) on cars since 1992. That is 26 years of use. They are so faded it is getting hard to read the numbers over 25 ft away., the plastic coatings peeled off years ago, and they don't reflect. NJ doesn't require tag stickers anymore, and a wad of them fell off leaving a 1996 sticker behind. I sure do like to get my money out of things it seems. Or more likely I'm just lazy. I wonder if the tags would be considered classics.
The NJMVC wants $11 for a replacement set of plates with the same number. More money for the Governor. It's a conspiracy, I tell ya.
The tags on my wife's Escape are a lot younger. She got those in 2000 for a 1998 Mercury Mountaineer. Then she transferred them to Her new Escape in 2012 . Only 18 years old.

Illinois....
Lost the sticker for the little trailer one year. Had to pay 20 for a replacement sticker but the yearly renewal is only 18 for a TA plate.
The replacement license plate fee is $6 for a single plate and $9 for a pair; the replacement sticker is $20. If a single plate and sticker are required, the fee is $26. If both license plates and sticker are required, the fee is $29.

Took me a few mins to figure out the plate system in other states, sounds like they are assigned to the person. In AK the plate is assigned to the vehicle and stays with it no matter how many owners it has, so the plate is no older then the vehicle.
I have personalized plates on my Ex and here you do "own" the personal plate and remove it if/when you sell the vehicle.

I was just being sarcastic a bit about the $11 for the plates. It is a bargain, but as I said, I'm just lazy, I guess. I just wanted to see if there was anyone else this lazy for so long.
Russ- I never knew that ANY state did the tags like in Alaska. Interesting. Learn something new every day. Yes they are assigned to the person and the vehicle here and you can transfer them between vehicles upon application for new registration. Registration and the tag number go hand in hand.

MN the plates stay with the vehivle, similar replacement schedule. If you have custom plates there id s way to keep them but it sounded like a hassle to me (my parents recently just went through the process after changing vehicles )

ND the plates stay with you, they issue replacement plates every 7-10 years

Our Oldsmobile was registered in ND until 2015, that car had had those plates for at least 10 years at that point. We brought it up here and I put personal plates on it.
Guy at work has a '86 F-150 he's restored it still has the original plates assigned to it in '86, but they are a bit faded and the amount of year stickers on the rear plate is thick haha
I was at a car show over the weekend, apparently a guy locally stumbled on a pile of matching new unassigned plates from the 70s, so long as you have the matching set you can have them registered to your vehicle. I'm going to try and follow up on that one. I think part of it is we don't have all the crazy taxes some of ya'll do.

Here in PA the tags are yours, but they can be transferred to a new owner if you sell the car, or you can keep that plate and transfer it to another vehicle of the same classification type (passenger car, truck, motorhome, etc....) and if you have antique, historic (one is old but with modern-ish electrical, lighting and brakes) or classic tags those tags are yours to keep if you sell the car but you can also sell them (for any amount) to the new owner of the qualifying car. The EX is considered a car by PA, so it's tags are cheap compared to what a 3/4 ton truck tags would be. My custom WE3ZS EX plates were an additional one time fee of $30 or so on top of the annual renewal cost of $36.
