Hello, I have a question for you guys. I am going to be putting in an automatic transmission into my 1965 f100, which has a 3 speed on the column now. How do I change the column to use with an automatic? I am rebuilding the truck with my 15 yr old son and would like to make it easier for all of us to drive. Thanks
There should be some threads on FTE, as to which later columns fit. I used a 78 column because I wanted the tilt, but I went to some greater lengths, shortening the column 4” for more space in the cab. There are a lot of other considerations which you can read about if you do a search in FTE. One thing to remember as well, is you will need either a column that has the mounting for a neutral safety switch or a transmission that has a mounting for a neutral safety switch....one or the other. That will make your life a little easier. There is also information on here as to how to remove the clutch pedal and modify the pedal bracket. Lots of things to think about.
You can also research installing a floor shift automatic transmission and keep your original column. Swap out the shift collar with one from a c.1965 manual floor shift, remove the clutch pedal and modify the pedal bracket.

Agree that a floor shifter may be a better option. You can get some nice setups at places like Lokar. Also, are you thinking of converting to power steering at some point? If so, you may want to install the column with the automatic shifter at that time. Just something to think about.

That might be another option bcs the transmission is coming off a 1978 truck. how hard was it to remove the old one and install the new one? Thanks
If you mean how hard to remove and install the transmission, it would help to know what engine you have and what transmission you are installing.
Should've been clearer, how hard was the job of replacing the steering column? I've never removed one... I'm going to head to a couple auto salvage yards this weekends. I'm just wondering about time and tools? Thanks
I swapped one from a 76 into my 66 a few years ago. I recall it was not that difficult. There was the clamp where the shaft attaches to the steering gear, the cowl where the column goes through the firewall, the shift linkage, the wiring harnesses inside at the base of the column, the bracket that mounts the column under the dash. I may be missing something. One thing you will have to deal with eventually is the signal/brake light wiring. The 78-to-65 connections will not be a straight fit. I ended using a 76 and a 66 wiring diagram to match and connect mine.
....All the things Old Coyote said...and several ways to approach it. I would refer to the link posted above and as much as you can read here. Things off the top of my head I can recall, which I did to my 66: 1) Added neutral switch to the transmission and wired it through the ignition circuit to start only in Park or Neutral. There is a pre-existing connector that you can tap into to accomplish this. 2) Added back up lights, since I had the NSS to do so. 3) Spliced all the 78 wiring into the 66 loom, including the on-column 4-way hazards. Most all of the wire colors match up. 4) Shortened the column tube and shift tube 4 inches...keep them position indexed. Shortened the steering shaft 4 inches by cutting 4” off the end and had it milled to a double-D. Used a Borgeson u-joint to match it up to a 74 power steering gearbox. 5) Installed an aftermarket steering wheel adapter and billet 15” steering wheel. 6) Removed the 66 column to dash bracket, indexed and weld to the 78 column. 7) Modified the 66 firewall to column outer bracket to clear the shift levers...or you will need the “short” bracket. Used the 78 cab/firewall seal inside the cab. Considerable work to do, but during a restoration is the best time. Let us know when and if you need more details.
Would have gone that route myself but was swapping in a power steering system along with the C4, so it was just as well to swap in the column too. In the end I guess it's a judgment call for the owner.
Hey I was just looking at the LMC website and they are showing a blow up of the steering components and it looks like I can replace simple things in the column and use the existing column, what do you guys think (I put link below)?
