Cheap scanner that does ABS bleeds
Cheap scanner that does ABS bleeds
Just a quick note for the forum for folks looking for a cheap scan tool that can activate the ABS bleed procedure on our trucks. I got the Autel Maxicheck pro for a little over 200 bills (
). It has a function to start the ABS brake bleed on my 2003 7.3. I'm not sure it is the absolute cheapest solution out there but for 200 bucks it worked for me!
Ah bro, you should have asked us first. If you were willing to spend that much coin, you should have purchased AutoEnginuity AutoEnginuity Enhanced Ford Expansion - Riffraff Diesel Performance

Well darn. AHAHA thanks Stewart, yep its too late, I already used the unit. Man, I thought I would give back to you guys for once, I keep asking stupid questions. I searched for this one for a while and should have just asked this forum! Well, maybe someone will see this thread and your response in the future and learn from my mistake! I am thinking about Riffraff for a FASS fuel pump though. Looking at this unit: http://www.riffraffdiesel.com/fass-s...20gph-55psi-1/

Not "why" for Riffraff, but "why" regarding the FASS unit.

I just searched google for the scanner Stewart - it was very shortly after I purchased the truck and I hadn't found this group yet.
I was thinking FASS because they are sold by Riffraff and I think they are supposed to be high quality? Overall, I am trying to put together a plan to upgrade the fuel system that makes sense. I don't plan on going nuts with horsepower or anything but I would like to put a Hydra on the truck and mostly use the best fuel economy mode and whisper mode (for drive throughs with the family). This is what I am thinking but I'm still trying to research the best plan (this is my first diesel truck and I am a complete newbie):
1. Get a new motocraft fuel sender and do the hutch mod with the Riffraff kit
2. Get the Riffraff Diesel inline fuel filer (Riffraff Diesel Inline Fuel Filter Canister) 10 micron filter
3. Get a really good fuel pump. I'm not sure which one but I was thinking one of the FASS units. Totally need suggestions though. I want a decent unit that has bit of headroom if I use some HP tunes etc (really as a safety measure).
Thats as far as I got with the plan
.

I just put in all new calipers. Bled them in less than 5 minutes each with the wife in the drivers seat. Overfill the fluid bottle, open the bleeder valve, put a 3/8" hose over top, have the hose pointing up about 1 foot. push the pedal 2-3 times and the air will be out. Tighten, and put the wheel back on. It takes longer to take the wheel off than to bleed, although it does take more than one person.
Ye god's the new scanners do a lot. And here mine is a elderly Acrton scanner from the ancient days before the year 2000. At least it resets most codes. So old it does not have update capability. Time for another, I think. Maybe I can get the wife to do it for Christmas. (fat chance)

I was asking because you have a 7.3L PSD, so if searching for stuff related strictly to your engine, I was going to make sure you searched the 7.3L forum and not just the Ex forum.

Stewart, you are at least one step ahead of me
. I JUST started to work my way through the 7.3 forum to get ideas for an upgraded fuel system. My rational is that most fuel systems I have owned in the past have a lifetime of 10 to 15 years or so max before they start failing. I haven't ever owned a diesel before but I've had all manner of gassers, normally aspirated, turbo, twin turbo, super charged etc.etc. My truck is 2003 to its fuel system/pump are about 15 years old - time to start thinking about its longevity. I would go stock but I figure heck, while I am addressing it, why not spend a few extra bucks and get a really solid system that will carry me more safely into the "slightly beyond stock" zone
. I don't know what the "best" option is for price/performance but I'm trying like mad to figure it out. LOTS and LOTS of options on the 7.3! Man I love this engine and truck!

Your best option for performance and especially reliability and longevity, is to keep the stock setup. It's proven and it flows PLENTY for even the most moderately modified rigs.
Change the pick-up screen/foot because they've been known to deteriorate over time and fall apart inside the tank, and even swap in a new Bosch pump, but other than doing some extra filtration, or the hutch & harpoon, you'll be spending money needlessly if you go with a FASS or AIRDOG, in my opinion, especially if it's just for preventive maintenance.

Its good to do if you have a truck that is unknown (I just bought mine) or if the brakes remain spongy after changing them out etc. It can't hurt and you may see a few air bubbles come out after the procedure. I did, so I did the procedure twice, until i did not see any more air bubbles. I also used a motive brake bleeder to do my system - runs great now!
