I was wondering if anyone had a cold air intake installed in their Ranger, and if so what type of performance gain did you get?
I have seen these create a large gain in some vehicles (usually high rev 4 bangers) and would like to see if they are worth their salt for the 4L 6 we have..or I'll just think about a K&N
Unless they have an intake with greatly improved airflow you might not get a noticeable increase. You already have a stock cold air system since it simply draws air from a location outside the engine compartment.
Beware of K & N. I have had a strange problem (see my post) that I am starting to think may have been caused by the filter or the filter oil moving down to other components. Do a search on the K & N filters and then choose wisely.
By far the best mod I did on my 4.0 is a 2.5" cat-back system. Of the mods I've tried it was the only one that gave an honest seat of the pants difference in power. And it was not a big name system, just had the local shop piece it together with a straight through type Hooker muffler.
Out of all my mods, the chip I got made a huge difference, I got better gas mileage and a lot more power off the line and anywhere in the rpm. I got a magnaflow exhaust 2.5 all the way and it made a differnce but not a lot. The intake I got made more of a diffence than than an exhaust.
First I went with a flowmaster 50 series. noticed a slight increase in MPG. Then I added the K&N FIPK. Better throttle response, and more increased MPG. Have had no problems with the intake. But its only been on awhile.
