I'm new to the forum, and just wanted to get your opinions on a Cold air intake filter setup for a 97 Expy 5.4L. I've seen some listed on eBay, have any of you guys tried this setup? was there a noticeable power gain? feedback appreciated.
I don't know which ones you have looked at on ebay, but beware of ebay scams! My friend got ripped. I payed the extra money for the K&N FIPK, and bought it at Auto Zone. I'm sure you can find it cheaper somewhere else, but I wanted to be sure if I didn't like it, I could get my money back. Now as in performance, I do get more miles to the tank, and I'm sure there is a horsepower gain, but I can't tell 10-20 horses. I would like to hook up to a dyno for a before and after.
I found the K&N Gen.II on E-bay, new in box really ship from Browns of Two Rivers. Great Vendor (1800-558-7750)... Only pay $169.00 (great deal). I agree w/ Tyger, go for the real thing, do not buy imitations, you will have to buy extra parts to fit and no warranty.
The K&N comes with "everything" you need and very easy instructions. I hooked up my 2002 - 5.4L Expy in like 45 minutes.
You can feel more power, but nothing like "wao"!!!
I bought it because I'm looking into improoving my gas mileage. I just filled up the tank last Sunday and are checking how many miles x tank I get with it.
I just bought the truck and I was getting like 10 miles per galon "tops". I'm not sure if this is because of the "winter mix" gas up here in CT but it sucks!. These are City miles.
Ok here we go...............
The "COLD AIR INTAKES" are actually, if you look at them are really warm air intakes. They in fact recycle warm engine compartment air. The only "TRUE" "COLD" air intake is made by Volant. It is a completly enclosed system that utilizes air from the outside of the engine compartment. They are pricey though.
The FIPK may have a little shroud under it but it still uses "engine air".
What I did was use a K&N filter and a WMS Velocity Tube. Velocity Tube kit uses a high flow 3.5" mandrel bent tube from the throttle body to the stock airbox along with a 3" tube from the airbox into the inner fender. This means cold air is drawn from the inner fender for excellent hp gains. Remember every 11 degrees rise in temperature will cost 1 hp - keep you airfilter in the box! Powder coated black, sold without the K&N - the stock replacement can be used.
Works better than those supposed cold air kits you see everywhere. AND the powder coated Tube costs 114.00 + 40.00ish for the K&N filter and you have a better setup than an FIPK.
If you want you could click here for more info on the WMS Velocity tube.
