Is it better to rebuild this engine or just get a reman from autozone? Its a 4.6L 2v in a 1997 F150. Engine runs fine, not burning oil at 260K miles, just looking ahead. Not that concerned about performance improvement, however, a 4.6L PI out of a 1999 Mustang or Crown Vic would be a nice swap.
IMHO, the AZ engines are disposibles…… cheap, use it and then throw the vehicle away when it's about to die. Rebuild with a good machine shop is IMHO the best option if your planning on keeping
Ive personaly use a couple of AZ reman engines from one of their suppliers called Surefire, and so far all engines have proven to be well built from 2 6.0 chevy vortec engines, 2 5.4 3v, 1 6.8 2v. One of the 6.0 has hit 150k with zero problems.

I had a 1997 4.6 that I had to replace in 2003 at 180K . I used a rebuilt from Jasper and it was excellent. Not expensive and performed well for years. Still on road today at over 300K.
In my opinion it depends on your circumstance with personal value of the vehicle.
Such as past repairs you need to get some value from before giving up or retiring the vehicle.
.
At 285000 plus, good tires, good trans, 4x4 etc, I Wil ride it as far as is practical before investing in another vehicle.

I agree....jasper use to be good, unfortunately today, most shops I have spoken with are very, very hesitant to use them..... parts that were re-used that should not have been, poor machine work and a warranty process that is not in either the shop or customers best interest.
