Just changed my fuel filter and it was very black and very oil let, I understand this means that the injector o rings are bad,I have 397000 on it and valve covers have never been off,I know that this is probable the problem but I don't know how this happens, maybe someone can explain this or has a flow chart, just for my knowledge. Thanks Jim
The high pressure oil pump (HPOP) sends engine oil under very high pressure into the fuel injector, and that oil pushes a plunger in the fuel injector which squeezes the diesel out of the nozzle into the combustion chamber. If and when the injector's o-rings are no longer able to contain that high pressure oil, some of the oil can escape into the diesel side of the fuel injector, which then allows the oil to mix with the diesel fuel. Any diesel that is not burned in the combustion chamber gets returned to the fuel tank for recycling through the fuel filter again. When enough engine oil gets into the diesel, the fuel filter turns black from the oil.
By the way, those injectors show just how hardy these engines and their components really are. You are treating that truck to good, clean diesel fuel and are otherwise taking care of it well. Congratulations!
Thanks that is what I was looking for,by the way in about 1 mount or so I will probable have 400000 mi, l am going to try and get a viteo of the roll over. thanks for the info.Jim'
If you have a way to capture some live data I would be interested in seeing your IPR duty cycle to see how hard it is trying to maintain HPOP pressure and your ICP to see how well it is maintaining pressure. I don't know if tired O-rings show up in the numbers.
Just to give you an idea of what I'm talking about. This is a link to a thread about using a phone, tablet or laptop with a program to get data from your trucks computer. This stuff has gotten really cheap and pretty easy to use. I would be lost without the electronics and this forum. More lost?
The picture is not very good. I just grabbed a quick easy link.
