Hopefully you guys have some knowledge on this. I think it may be the transfer case but I'm not sure. My truck works fine in 4wd but when I put the switch into 2 high and put the hubs in auto I start to feel a grinding/vibration underneath me. It's not in the suspension. If it starts doing that while I'm driving and I put the switch into 4 high while moving it immediately stops doing that. It doesn't happen at all if I keep the switch in 4 high and the hubs unlocked or locked. Has anyone else had this issue of heard of it?
Not all years and models are the same, you should always post your vehicle information. That aside it sounds like one of your front hubs is not fully engaging.

I have a 2003 with the v10. If one hub isn't engaging wouldn't the switch on the dash not affect that?
When you are switched into 2wd and hubs in auto position have you confirmed the hubs are actually unlocked ?
if not, put truck in park, brake on, crawl under the front bumper and firmly grab the inner axle at the ujoint and rotate, you should be able to turn the axle by hand even if it is very firm it will rotate. If not that means the hub is still locked and will need to be rebuilt or you have a vacuum leak somewhere between the hub, knuckle line, pump or solinoid.
The grinding noise more times then not is from the needle bearings in the back of the wheel hub.
edit. Ford considers the needle bearing a non serviceable part bit is widely available part from Napa and others #B2110 ,
Thanks for all the good info guys, I really appreciate it. I will try to get under the truck this evening at work if I have some free time. But judging by all the info I've been reading in the links it seems like it could be a lot of different things. Unless I'm just taking in too much at once lol
