2001 4r100 delayed reverse V10 Excursion

So the transmission went out and I had it rebuilt about 2000 miles ago.

When I got it back I noticed some slipping and shudder in reverse. Engine would rev but little movement in reverse when trying to back up a hill.

On flat ground no slip or shudder. Delayed reverse engagement of 3 seconds or so.

Took it back and was told a couple valve body bolts were not torqued right. The reverse slip shudder under load is fixed but still has a 3 second or so delayed reverse engagement. No issues in any forward gear.

I have 3 of these excursions and none has this issue until the trans was rebuilt in one. The other 2 with 110k and 250k shift into reverse 2 to 3 times faster.

I took back to transmission shop and was told it's normal....I disagree.

Any suggestions?

Three seconds seems a bit too long for reverse, I would install a pressure gauge to see if there is a problem with the line pressure.

My thought is they left the three bolts loose on the small plate that seals the low reverse passages in the case, that might have smoked the low reverse clutch and that could be the delay.

Thank you, I will take it back and ask them to pressure test.

Which are the 3 bolts that seal the small plate for the reverse passages?

Is that the small plate at the tail end of the separator plate?

I own a 2001 F250, 4x4, V10 with the same 4R100 transmission and I’ve put 166,000 miles on it since I bought it new in October of 2001.

In the last month it started occasionally having a delay before entering reverse. Not every time, but quite intermittent. The longest delay is 5-6 seconds, but it will then enter reverse quickly the next time.

Am I looking at a simple fix or an expensive rebuild? Ideas??

Here is an update to my F250’s delayed reverse entry...

It was as simple as my shifter linkage was loose! My transmission guy said all of my pump pressures are perfect and my fluid is like new, so he began looking for other causes for my truck’s issue. He found the shift linkage had one bolt about halfway out and the other one was almost all of the way out!

This slop in the shifter linkage was causing the transmission to sometimes line up with reverse and go into gear and other times not. He even aligned my gear indicator so that it now points to the correct gear. Thank goodness it was a cheap and easy fix.
