Just got my pickup back from a local place, had 4.56 Nitro gears installed front and back of my pickup, swapped over to my 33's and reprogrammed for both at the same time.. Man this thing drives so much better, it does feel like its a bit higher in the RPM when doing 70 down the highway, but in town.. its a whole new beast.. So far I am incredibly happy with the performance, I have to dump close to 500 miles into it before this weekend when i take the trailer to the fairgrounds for a week... I think im going to have a hard time keeping my foot out of it.
It seems to have smoothed out the shifts quite a bit, first gear always felt really sluggish and now it smoothly accelerates up through 2 and 3rd just nice and easy..
It's a whole new truck feel now huh? That sounds like a good combo for your truck. Did you notice much when you added the tuner? I've been eyeballing those here lately.

You can go back and read some of my comments on dads 4.30 truck vs my factory 3.73 truck with the same wheel/tire package. I would say light acceleration around town felt effortless in his truck vs my truck working. It's like shaving weight off the truck. It's just a better driving experience. My truck feels almost the same now with 4.88's, even with the heavy 37's. You are going to enjoy them, and after a short while, you want think anything about turning a few more RPMs on the interstate. If you do a lot of interstate driving, you may find better mpg with a taller tire, but around town, I'm guessing your mpg stays just as good, even with a bigger tire. Good mod!
I would love to see mpg, daily driving and towing comparisons.
what gears are you coming from?
Coming from 3.73 gears and 31in tires I was averaging around 11.5 to 12.5 depending on how I drove it, I drove 30 miles round trip for work, about 10-14 of that was highway doing 55-60 and the rest was town driving. Going to my 33s on 3.73s I went down to a constant 10.5, so I'm really hoping this will correct that.

I have been running the timer since I bought the truck 2 years ago used.. I hated the shift points coming from a manual car and pickup, rolling in 6th great at 45mph just didn't work with me.. so no the timer didn't add any magical power, but it does change my shift points, allowed me to change my Tpms sensors. And now change the gear ratio.

I haven’t even picked up my new to me 2012 6.2 with 3.73 gears and figuring if 4.30 from the factory is good, 4.56 must be better.
Hopefully your mpgs go up so I can sell it to wife next year and do mine. 😜
I just finished installing 4.56 in mine as well. I currently have 33" tires but will be putting 35's on next week. You're right though, huge improvement over the 3.73s. Truck doesn't lug any more.
I have a 5 star tune waiting for me. I havent flashed it in yet. I havent updated anything on the truck since the gear install so it shifts a bit crazy. But i think it will be in its sweet spot with 4.56 and 35s.

How much of your driving is highway? I have at start tune that was originally made for my 3.73 gears and then I just selected the 4.56 in the options when flashing it right after picking up the pickup, it used to shift into 5th gear at 41mph but now it's closer to 35, the pickup is night and day difference in town, I notice that it's a bit slower to get up to 60 than it was, or at least that's my impression..
I would really like to hear what your experience is when you go to 35s.. I'm tempted to get either 34s or 35s possibly in a road tire.. maybe in a MT, I do have a commuter car now, so I'm getting less concerned about mpg.
buddy and I picked up a 98 beetle with 110k, 5sp manual, put a 4in lift and 30s on it, was getting 29mpg before, not sure what it is now, but it's not to bad.
Update, I have put 450 miles on the pickup since Wednesday last week, trying to hit that 500 before I tow my trailer to fair today. I took it from the valley over to the coast and then a few times back and forth here in the valley, averaged 12.1, so I think that's down alittle bit from my normal empty driving, but not bad over all, I'm more interested in how it pulls the trailer, I'll be on relatively flat ground today so it should go smoothly.
On a side note . My lie o meter is a mile off. It's now closer to 3mpg off of real life.
Thought this might be interesting to some. 3.73 pinion on the right, 4.56 pinion on the left.
These 37 spline pinions are massive. The shaft diameter near the big bearing is over 2". Here is a solid spacer i turned up instead of using the crush sleeve that was provided. Not sure if necessary, but i feel better about it not loosening up ever.
And here is the truck with the new 35's installed. (actually 305/70/18) Cooper STT Pro's. I think the gearing is just right for this size tire.
Very nice! I never saw the gears before they were installed so that's pretty cool for the size comparison. The truck felt quite a bit better while pulling my trailer, just holding the gear longer and when I finally stepped on it, it pulled pretty hard
You installed them yourself? How long did it take?
Any lift on the truck to fit the tires?
Nice ride!
Thanks! Yes I installed them myself. Actually i only have the rear axle done, hoping to get to the front soon. It took the better part of the weekend for the rear axle alone.
And no lift on the truck to fit the tires and no rubbing.
