Mercon V
My daughters 1996 Explorer XLT,4.0L, 4x4 automatic, 183,000 miles, still looks almost new and has original drive train and runs great. I changed tranny fluid like 7 years ago and installed tranny cooler at that time, can't remember if it calls for Mercon V, or Mercon/Dexron III or not; going to change soon so "help". Its build date is May 1996. Thanks for any help

The factory service manual for the 2006 Explorer with 4R70W transmission calls for 13.9 quarts of MERCON® Multi-Purpose Automatic Transmission Fluid XT-2-QDX or equivalent MERCON® approved fluid. The owner's manual, assuming your daughter has that with the truck, should also list the recommended fluid type.
