Hello All, I have a 2007 F150 XLT, 5.4 flex fuel 4x4 truck. The other day my starter went bad, so I had to push the truck into my garage. After I repaired the starter, I started the truck, and now, my power steering has hard spots when I turn the wheel. Any help would be Greatly appreciated.
I would assume you have air bubbles in the system.. Set in the driveway and start the motor. Turn the steering wheel all the way to the LEFT until you hear the pump go over relief pressure... keep it there for 2 seconds... Now rotate the wheel all the way to the right until it stops and the pressure goes over relief... and hold for 2 seconds...... do this 2-3 times, then test drive. If needed, repeat until all the trapped air is gone.
Actually its better to turn all the way to one direction then shut off the engine until the PS fluid is clear of bubbles. Then repeat going to the right. Going back and forth with the engine running just aerates the fluid more.
Had the same problem with my 05. wasn't anything wrong with the power steering pump system or rack unit. The truck has an intermediate steering wheel shaft that connects the base of the steering wheel to the steering box. The intermediate shaft has u joints at both ends that are known to rust out. Bought the part from Rock Auto for $100.
