I’m looking at picking up a crew cab F-150 to pull an open car trailer weighing up to 5500 pounds. Every 4wd truck I’ve seen in my area has the FX4 package with “off-road tuned” shocks. The truck will never go off road. Any downside vs normal shocks for road use? Is the ride height also higher with FX4 vs. non-FX4 4wd?
The ride height is the same. Most say the FX4 shocks are actually a worse ride than the regular shocks.
The dealers just seem to order the FX4 package.
FX4 shocks ride rougher than standard. They don't need to be that way, as evidenced by the ride of the Raptor (which rides better than any other F150). But the Raptor has expensive shocks, and the FX4 shocks are cheap.
Just change the shocks out to some Bilsteins or Eibachs. BTW, the rear shocks on my FX4, 157" Max Tow, have the same part number as my friend's 2wd STX.
That’s what I was afraid of. Guess I’ll have to look harder. Or go with an Expedition.
You might test drive one first, it may ride nice. My truck is a 157" supercrew and it rides just fine.
I don't think I'd write it off without a test drive.
Rear shocks are cheap and easy to replace.
I've got a 2018 Platinum FX4 that has a stock suspension. I also don't do any off-road adventures. The factory shocks seem to be doing just fine. The only thing I've considered doing is removing the skid plates.

What is/was the issue with skid plates? Weight? Access?
Exactly what JKBrad said........I did Bilstiens on my 2016 XLT......what a difference!....... also did them years ago on my 2006 super duty ....still rides great.....

You can buy the Bilstein 5100 rear shocks for $74 each on Amazon today. I know it's not free, but when he can change the shocks for $150 total and get the truck he wants....that sounds like win.
And, that is only if he doesn't like the stock ride...which he might be totally fine with. My truck rides great, I don't have any complaints. Maybe the guys that complain have never owned a truck?

The rear end of mine likes to bounce around a bit if the road is rough. My bad. I was looking at Summit Racing and the price I saw was apparently for the pair.

Hah, I've owned a dozen trucks, and driven countless others. The FX4 shocks ride pretty crappy. Not the worst ever, but not good. Being a truck doesn't mean it needs to ride rough when empty.

Well, there you have it...straight from the very experienced Delta Echo.
OP, get the Expedition. Ford F-150 FX4 trucks are crappy and you will have a nearly impossible task of finding a 4x4 F-150 at a dealership without the FX4 option (just kidding).
Or, just go for a test drive and see what YOU think of the ride. Obviously, on an internet forum....you'll get a variety of opinions...which are all subjective.
