I'm sure there are plenty of these threads, but every situation is different. It's a 2018 F350 Lariat, very well-loaded, VIN 1FT8W3BT3JEC91091. Sticker of $76,610, Invoice of $71,210. Dealer priced it at invoice, but they keep touting themselves as the high volume dealer (Sill-Terhar motors in Broomfield, CO), which to me means that they can absolutely do better. I don't think asking for $1k under invoice is much, especially considering I can walk into my Ram dealer (don't wanna, I'm ready for a switch) and get $2k off invoice, no questions asked. I specifically picked this truck because it's one on their lot, and they don't have but 8 SD trucks in stock. Hail storm hit the area hard, and also I'm being told about Ford factory fire, both excuses to show low inventory in the area and justify the price. Honestly, area inventory isn't any different than it was 5 months ago when I started researching this truck, in terms of what I'm looking for. Plenty of trucks out there, just very few with what I want. They are also saying that these trucks are going to jump $2k, thanks to tariffs, but I've seen nothing to substantiate that $2k claim.
There's another truck at a dealer a few hours away that is stickered at $3k less, but doesn't have the power running boards I want, and has clearance lights which I really do not want. They sound willing to deal, though I have not asked for their bottom price.
1k under invoice is digging into the holdback, you would need the invoice to figure out how much holdback they have. Do you have a PCO by chance? There was a recent 3k PCO that was active last week. That would help.
for reference i just snagged my leftover 17 f350 crew cab 4x4 drw king ranch sticker of 77600 for 68 and change. probably not the best deal considering it's a leftover but i'm saying they can do better than invoice IMO.
I had the same issue with no one stocking a truck with the options I wanted (high trim, 6.2, 4.30, long bed) and ended up ordering. If you don't need something immediately, I would recommend asking what they would do for you on a factory order. My dealer (fairly high volume but not huge) was willing to sell for $1500 under invoice on a truck with a sticker $10K lower than the one you're looking at. Left themselves about $300 in holdback in exchange for an easy, quick sale. If your local dealer isn't willing to do that, I'm sure someone is.
I figured they'd be more willing to deal on a truck that's been sitting on their lot, rather than one they'd have to order. The salesman even told me that months ago. Just spoke with him and offered a thousand under invoice, as long as I can get $50k for my trade. If they're willing, I'll give them a credit app and probably trade it in tomorrow. Crossing fingers.
Well, unfortunately, they are 100% unwilling to come even $1 below invoice, so I'm off to hit up the dealer that's a few hours away to see what they say.
Try the Costco Auto Program. I just bought a 2018 Lariat Ultimate with Ultimate Tow for 10k below sticker. I'm sure it varies a little by dealer but worth looking in to
I bought my '17 leftover CCLB 6.7 Lariat F250 4wd Memorial Day for $53k. The sticker was $66k something and I didn't know of any of the deals everyone talks about. It took me 3 times of going back saying it isn't cheap enough lol. So they can come down if they really want to.
Most dealers will give you the lowest price over email if you explain the situation. I wouldn't drive any distance to a dealer on the off chance you could negotiate a good rate. I think they work just as hard (or harder) if you show just a little interest online so they have to work a bit to convince you to go there...

Interesting thought... Yeah this dealer I was going to was where I went first, months ago. They are seriously like 5 blocks from work, so it's convenient. I'm pretty sure they are trying to call my bluff, and I'm not going to fall for it. Kept acting like their truck was this diamond in the rough. One of a kind. Won't find that anywhere else. I found a Platinum just 15 miles north that is $2k more, and is EXACTLY what I want. The one I offered to buy was black, and I want magnetic. So I'll hit up this other dealer and see what they can do on that truck. I just can't believe it. I've never had a dealership produce so little effort to earn my business, and I will act accordingly.
Invoice is were I START negotiating. When I bought my 2011 F150, I told them I knew what invoice price was, and that I also know their cost is much less, so if their first offer was above invoice I was leaving. The F350 I just ordered was about $2k under invoice before any talk of trades, rebates, or my PCO. They can do better, as long as they aren’t using some of that to inflate your trade value.
I don't care what invoice price is, how much the dealer gets in holdbacks, rebates, or anything else. The only number I want the dealer to give me is the price for the truck out the door with all fee's, taxes, and tags. Then I shop the number to other dealers. This works with a trade in or not.
Don't get caught up in the game where one dealer offers a fantastic price but then adds on a huge doc fee and or other charges.

Only problem with this method, today, is that dealers here today aren't willing to sell each other trucks because inventory is slightly low. It's almost impossible to find two trucks with the same configuration, at multiple dealers, so you can't get an even quote. And yeah... this dealer that refuses to lower their price has a $699 dealer fee. It's absurd.

^^^. Exactly right. That’s the only way to compare real prices. It simplifies negotiation and eliminates ability for dealers to play games.
