'54 COE

I found this '54 COE. I can get a complete ifs from a '91 or '92 Chevy 3500 and a dualie rearend from another C3500. I cannot get the frame from either truck so I'm thinking about just swapping the ifs and rearend onto the '54 frame. The rear springs look good on the '54. I know these kind of builds usually are done with a full frame swap, but why not do it this way? Anybody done it? Thanks.

Sure you can do it that way if your donor parts fit correctly. Might want to check the track width and steering box location of your donor before you fire up the torch...

Actually, after doing some looking at COEs I think I might be happier with 3/4 ton suspension and 8 lug wheels instead of dualies. I can get Chevy/GMC 2500 stuff with no problem. Either way , I think I will reuse the '54 frame. Any suggestions will be appreciated. Thanks.

the steering box angle is always one of the tallest hurdles in any COE build.
plan accordingly...
a 3/4 T Econoline might be what you're after?

if you find that your steering column appears to be ahead of your steering box (regardless of what type of chassis you decide to use), the following "Steer Clear" offset steering box worked perfectly for me. I grafted a Crown Vic front suspension under my original F5 frame and it works perfectly.

From this side view, you can see the steering column where it's supposed to be and the 16" offset steering box then drops the shaft directly down into the Crown Vic Power steering rack... You can see the knuckle at the bottom...

I believe they come in about 6 sizes ... from an 8" offset up to 16"... but you'll want to double check that...

they are about $599 but solved my steering problem perfectly.
