Hi all, below is a picture of where, I believe, my transfer case is leaking. The left and right bolts appear to be clean so I think it's coming from the middle area at the bottom. Is there a seal that can be replaced? If so, any idea what it'll cost?
As long as it's not coming frim the front output shaft seal, shift shaft, or input shaft mating surface and simply collecting there, then the leak is between the case halves and will requre that the transfer case be removed, split, and resealed with anaerobic sealer or RTV.
The pic looks like aft looking forward. Hose everything down with simple green or whatever. Get it sanitary, check level and run it. Fresh idea. May be downstream from something unrelated.
Denny (skid plate looks like it's full too. Unless you back up at 50 mph, I'd say hire a maid and see what you see.)
Thanks guys. Cleatus - I'll check the shaft seals and see if I can locate any other drips. Denny - it is indeed aft facing forward. I'll hose it down and check the level. The skid plate is definitely full of fluid so I'll look for clues further forward (and avoid the temptation of trying to go 50 in reverse to see where else the fluid might go )
Sorry if these pictures are not formatted well. I can't figure out how to resize them. In any case, I took a look from the front facing back as well as the oil dipstick adapter (which looked ok).
These four are from the front of the transfer case. The maid has not yet arrived for a good scrubbing, but am I seeing what I think I'm seeing? (a transfer case which appears to be JB welded??)
Has your truck ever been wrecked? A shot to the driver side front could have pushed on the front driveshaft and cracked the case where that gray goop is.
coax - it may have been grenaded, but it still seems to work! I haven't had a chance to take the plate down and look closely, but I plan on getting to it this week.
mach - I'm not sure if it's ever been in a wreck, but if it had been they did a great patch up as there is no evidence. The previous owner did put a hell of a brush guard on it though. Maybe he had a habit of hittin stuff.
They did a Masterful job, I'll give you that.... But those units get ALOT of Torque Torture and I don't think epoxy, (if t hat's what it is....) will hold up indefinitely, and I would suspect fatigue cracks to manifest themselves with age and wear. Don't get me wrong, I believe JB weld will be the savior of the planet as we know it, as much as the next guy....(That and Duct Tape) But Beware and aware.....
Agreed on the JB weld and duct tape saving the world (as well as their limitations). I'm sure I'll need some WD40 (the third in the world saving trifecta) at some point to help loosen those bolts and drop that sucker down.
