Hi everyone. Ive been trying to set the valve lash on a 66 f100 with 300 inline 6. It seems that there’s 10 ways to skin a cat. I’m trying to find the best way to get it right so I don’t wipe something out. Ive adjusted using the top dead center method tightening till pushrod stops spinning then an extra 1/4 turn. When i finish with all 6 and go back to 1 its loose again. What am i doing wrong? Hope some of you engine builders can set me straight. Thanks, bill
Er, you are rotating the engine to each cylinder TDC aren't you? Are you sure you are not in the overlap cycle? If you are doing this on a non- running engine the lifters may bleed down slowly and remove the preload. Make sure the engine is run recently - preferrably warmed up. One quarter-to-one half turn from no lash is plenty.
I may not have been clear enough in my reply. I adjust them with the engine off, but previously run to fill up all the lifter bodies. If all the lifters are OK then you will have enough time to adjust before they bleed down sufficiently to affect preload. Did you ever notice when you start up a cold engine that it clatters for a few seconds? That is because the lifters that were being held up by a cam lobe bled their oil fill down and until the oil pump replenishes the lifter they clatter.
With each cylinder on TDC I back off the rocker until the ifter spins freely between my finger and thumb. Then tighten until I feel pressure on the pushrod. Then the additional quarter / half turn.
Hello the easiest way I have seen is something Derick from vice grip garage showed on his channel. I can try to explain but it is easier if you go to vicegrip garage on utube and search for valve adjust. He explains it very well
