I am replacing my 2003 7.3's front wheel hubs and brakes. When I removed the old hub, I realized how filthy the mating surface to the knuckle was totally crapped up. I didn't want to wire wheel the surface for fear of scratching the hell out of it. Any suggestions on how to clean it off, or is it good enough to grease up the inside and just install the new hub? Also, the spacer that is inside the knuckle goes with the groves facing inward, correct?
Update - I just put the new one on, after greasing the inside etc. I found a video and it looks like the spacer has the 4 groves facing inward from this video:
Ok, I have an extra o ring, so I’ll pull the hub back off and drill wire wheel it to clean it up. The inside surfaces actually look ok, it’s just the outside area due to rust that looks horrible.
Canyon, I also applied a thin layer of timken bearing grease to the fiber thrust washer and the inner metal seal it sits on, is this correct or should I brake clean off those areas.?
