Head Gasket Scare

2 weeks ago I bought a 2007 f350. I drove it 500 miles to my home and along way saw that the radiator was leaking. Having done some research prior tp the purchase, I already had and android w/ torque pro and monitored the temps the entire trip (along w all the other stuff). She didn't over heat but it was obvious that the radiator was leaking.
After I was home, I teed into the degas bottle and was getting the dreaded 20 psi test fail. So ... I have been putting together a parts list for HG replacement, this included a new radiator, which I installed today (I was Bored). After the install , I tested the pressure in the coolant system again SURPRISE! No more overpressure , what gives? Everything I could find for sure led me to believe that the HG"S were blown, Now all is good. never went above 14 psi, uphill, WOT. up to 100 mph . normal driving at 65 was 8 psi. I live at 5400 ft elevation the only thing I can guess is that the open system was flashing to steam and shooting the gage to over 20 psi.
PO has already done the BPD egr cooler and upgraded oil cooler from Ford, he also did the Blue spring upgrade. I'm a happy camper now. Still planning on head gaskets though.

Are you confident your antifreeze is a 50/50 mix?

What coolant is in it?

20 psig exceeds the typical cap rating. Are you sure your gauge is accurate?

What were the corresponding oil and coolant temps when you saw 20 psig?

Cat elc coolant, not sure of the 50/50 mix, since I didn't mix it, oil and coolant temps never more than 10 degrees apart, at 20 psi it would read 215, oil and coolant (Before the radiator was replaced). Oil never reached above 215 degrees. After a good run, it would go up to 20 psi if i were in park an reved the engine, it was pretty scary. I do not know what the tsat is rated at, PO said he had a mechanic replace the tstat and cap with ford parts.

The test I did today reached 210 degrees on coolant and oil on a step incline WOT. The gauge was purchased last weekend. I would assume it would be accurate with in 1 psi +/-. Today's test was dramatically different than last weekends' test.

During normal operation the oil and coolant are within 3 degrees and I run about 195 on the coolant temps.

The gauge is 100 psi gauge.

If oil doesn't exceed the coolant temp when everything is heated yup, then you have an error in one of the readings. The coolant is cooling the oil and it can't cool it to a temp below what it is at.

Also, read the rating on the cap. If it is 15 or 16 (which it most likely is), then the pressure gauge is probably off a little. The higher the gauge range, the more it will be off at the low end.
