Isnt the payload of a 450 lower than a similarly equipped 350? From what I understand this is because of the higher curb weight of the 450 plus the fact that Ford kept the GVWR low enough to keep it a Class 3. From what I read and hear most 450 owners feel comfortable that the truck is more capable than what its papers and stickers say.

On paper the payload is lower because as you said Ford has capped it at 14,000 GVWR for registration purposes. Front and rear axle ratings total 15,900 lbs (both 350 and 450 I believe), so in reality the GVWR would be about 16,000, registration aside. That being said, no one in their right mind would consider a 350 a more capable tow rig than a 450, regardless of what the yellow sticker says.
