At first I was like how hard could swapping a power steering pump and steering box be? Oh dear lawdy. I had to abandon my pursuit of replacing the pump and steering box. Why in the name of all that is holy, are the steering box bolts torqued to the tune of 500+ lb/ft? I have an impact gun rated to 500 lb/ft and even it couldn't get them loose. But heat prevailed, and I won that round. Turns out this was an all out war. But at least its free in the truck, but not going to come out. I caved and gave up...for the day. I decided to move on to my front brakes. I was getting some pulsing under hard stops, but no pulling to one side or the other. So I started with the left side since it was half torn down for the steering box/pump. I pulled off the caliper to have the bottom pot fall to pieces in my hand. A few choice words later, I decided it was a good time to upgrade to better calipers. Then I removed the rotor. The back side of the rotor looks like the surface of the moon. 1/4 to 1 inch craters in the surface of the rotor. Pads were worn top to bottom on a slant. Then for giggles I decided to spin the hub, just check it out. I've heard dying cats sing a better tune.
So, I've already got the upgrade rotor and pads from Stop Tech, but since I need a new caliper, should I go with Stop Tech too? Or just OEM? Regarding the hubs, I am going to rebuild them both at the same time because its smart and if one is done most likely the other is done too. Who should I go with for the hubs? Warn, OEM, random other brand? I like the auto lock feature of OEM hubs. And this truck doesn't see very aggressive 4x4 time. Thanks for the advice!
