Stuck 360

Just picked up a 72 sport custom with a 360. It was parked about 15 years ago running, but now it's seized up. I hope to get it freed up, just to drive it a bit. More to see what the steering and suspension is like, and get set up to repair anything it needs. My plan is to make the 360 a 390 down the road.

Anyway, lets open a can of worms! What's your suggestions on freeing this thing up, before tearing it down?
p.s. it's an automatic!

First thing I would do is pull the plugs and put a liberal amount of the penetrating oil of your choice into each cylinder. Change the oil. Pull the distributor, and spin the oil pump to get oil where ever it can. Remove the valve covers and soak them with oil. Plan on doing this for a couple weeks. Then try turning the crank with a socket. First one way then the other. Oil her up again and try next week. Check out your gas tank in the mean time.

Only a couple things to add to this. With the valve covers off, watch the valves as you turn the crank with a socket to make sure the valves are not sticking.

Also, pull the starter. I've seen them seize up and not turn after an extended "rest" period so it's worth checking.

I did a 390 that had sat for 7 years by pulling the plugs and pouring a quart of ATF into all 8 holes, then using a breaker bar, rotated the crank two full turns. Then put a battery on it and cranked it till the cylinders quit squirting ATF. Replaced the plugs and points then poured gas into the carb and hot wired it. Didn't start then because the condenser was bad. Once I changed that, it fired right up and purred like a kitten.
