Rear Axle Spline

Howdy, folks. So just a quick question for anyone that might know. I'm looking to add a Detroit locker or similar to my diff and they're asking if it's a 28 spline or 31 spline. Does anyone know?

1988 F150 XLT Lariat 5.8L
2WD - Axle code 18 - 8.8 - 3.08 gears original rear end.

From what I've read, the mustangs are the only ones that had 28 spline and everything else had 31. Correct me if I'm wrong.

All truck 8.8" rear axles are 31 spline.

It is 31.

Adding this to lengthen my message to at least 10 characters.

I was definitely considering 4.10, just haven't looked around. Plus, I don't have the tools at home to rebuild a diff myself. So I would probably end up just swapping the rear end with another F150 or Bronco.

You should be able to rent anything you need from the local parts store. It's not a difficult thing to do, but can be intimidating for a first-timer.

I added a detroit to my rear when I went down to 4.56 gears since it was all apart already.

If going full carrier locker definitely change gears now. If lunch box, gear change can be done later without financial penalty.

Yeah, I'm a technician's apprentice. I'm not a professional by any means but I'm doing my best to get there. I'll look into it for sure. Thanks for the input!

Yeah i was planning to do the lunchbox style locker. But I'll look into swapping gears as well.

I put an Aussie in last month. Off road performance is incredible, just be prepared for noises on the street. I've been asked "what's wrong with your truck?". Oddly enough, mine is quiet during right turns, but quite loud during left turns. Install tolerances were very close left to right, and well inside spec, so I'm not sure why there's a volume discrepancy.
