G'day all .. .. I have a 1997 250 HD 7.3 Power stroke right hand drive as i'm in Australia . Has anyone had the problem switching from one fuel tank to the other not happening ? When I first bought the truck it wouldn't switch from tank 1 to tank 2 , I found the fuse under dash and changed it and it all worked again . I have looked at the fuse and changed it with Nil result this time , well I think it was the right fuse this time not sure .. Is there a fuse for this in the fuse cluster under the bonnet ? Have tested dash switch for continuity appears to be good . Has anyone had this problem and found a solution ? I'm thinking maybe the cross over valve on the chassis might be not working .. How do I test it ? I'm sure there has been a post on this before I just can't seem to find one though on this problem .. Any help would be much appreciated ..
Cheers Fred
Welcome to the forums Fred! While the fuel selector valve not switching tanks happens, it is not a real common problem. If the "shower head" fuel strainer rots off, you can suck debris into the valve and that will keep it from switching. You should be able to hear a faint zipping sound from the valve when you switch it. You may have to be under the truck to hear it. You can try removing all fuel lines from the valve, and blowing compressed air threw the valve from the ports that are on the engine side, both the feed and return. Then switch the valve to the other tank and do it again. This may free the valve if it is stuck. Most replace it with one from a recycle yard, as new ones are quite spendy. The fuse for the selector valve is the one under the dash. It will effect the fuel gauge if it is blown.
Thanks Tom , I will have a go at what you have suggested as to disconnect and blow out lines on fuel valve .. Yes they are expensive new that'a for sure Work's out around $935.00 for a new one down here ..
The seals also fail and lock the unit from working. If you feel it and its hot, it's junk. I have been through 3 in 1 year. first were used and failed fast. The last one was new. no problems.
