I just bought a 2001 Excursion 7.3 and it has been quite the battle with repairs. With only 125,000 miles on it I thought that it wouldn't be quite this bad. I wasn't told quite the truth when I bought it come to find out. It has been sitting for quite a few years and lots of things wrong with it. I probably should have done some homework on it, I had ran the carfax and drove it and everything seemed pretty normal for a 17 year old rig. It has been an eye opening experience, I just want to get to the fun items that I want to add.
List of items replaced or needed-
Upper and lower ball joints.
Every seal in the front axle
All 5 door locks
Fuel Sender/Pump
Tires and Wheels
New rear brakes
Transmission- Torque converter- Transfer case- Tranny cooler- Edge CS2 Insight
Seems like it needs a new steering box also, it likes to wander a lot.
Any words of wisdom or other items I need to be aware of?
Thank you,
on the wander issue read the thread in the tech index on 5* of caster.
Your worn steering box along with sagged springs is the likely culprit.
if you measure from the center of the hub to the bottom of the fender arch and post up all 4 corner measurements we can get an idea of the condition of your suspension and possible issues.

Oh I'm sure the leaf springs are bad they are completely flat in the front, it has some sort of lift on it. 5100 Bilstein shocks on all 4 corners. I am into this rig way more than I wanted to be which isn't super fun.

they came from the factory with flat leaf springs, that is the design.
Driver Front- 26 1/2"
Driver Rear- 26 1/4" air bags have 20lbs in them though
Pass Front- 26 1/2"
Pass Rear- 27 1/2" air bags have 20lbs in them though
stock is 23 front and 24 rear do clearly the previous owner modified the ride height.
for now i would concentrate on getting the worn parts like the steering box replaced but eventually you will want to get it aligned paying special attention to caster settings.

I just had it aligned after I did my ball joints and the shop I took it to said it was dead nuts. I never did get a read out of the alignment though.

factory spec is 3.5* +/- 2* of caster.
so you could be “dead nuts” and the excursion still wander like a drunken sailor.
3.5* is marginal, meaning that any worn part is likely to cause wander issues, at 5.5* a worn part is still going to need replacing but the ex will still travk true. at 1.5* which is still in spec and could be called dead nuts by a shop not wanting to hassle a caster change the Ex will hard to keep in a straight line.
and yes i have tested all 3 of those caster settings and more with various setups.
there are a few other rebuilders who have a decent reputation but ive never had reason to use any other then redhead on a ex-f250 short of going to one of the race builders.
What was wrong with your transfer case? They are usually long lasting with proper maintenance, I bet the fluid was never changed or it had a leak and ran out of fluid. Fuel pumps don't commonly go bad at that low millage either, every thing else is normal for a 125,000 mile 17-18 year old vehicle.

Nothing was wrong with the transfer case but since they were in there I just had it rebuilt.
Pulled the fuel pump last night and the electrical was chewed to hell from mice or rats. It has been sitting for quite a while.
Got a new steering box on the way.
