Hand Calculated Mileage- What you get
I have a stock 2010 F250 SRW with 355 gears, hauling a 10K 5er, I get 8.5 on the Texas Interstate. That means 70MPH. I swear I did 1 tank at 65, still got 8.5mpg.
I think I may trade up to a 2015 or newer F350. Before I commit that Chunk of money, I would like to see what others see in real life.
Thanks
56Jeff

2000 F250 SRW 7.3 diesel with 3.73 hauling a 12K 5th wheel and was getting 12.5 MPG over 1000 miles hand calculated. This was averaging 65 MPH through stop lights, long flats, mountain grades, etc...
Now that we have a smaller 5th wheel, I get 13.5 MPG with the trailer and 18.5 without the trailer. All hand calculated on stock sized tires and wheels.

I put around 10K miles hauling my 13K+ 5th wheel with my 2015 F250 6.7 PSD with 3.31's. While towing I was averaging 10.5 MPG mostly on the Florida flatlands mostly at 65mph Without the trailer I average 15mpg in rush hour and 18 mpg on the highway at 75mph.
Just got my new F350 and no towing experience yet. Getting ready to go for a 2 week, 2K mile round trip in a week or so I'll know whats what after that. The F350 has 4.10 gearing so I know I'll be good to tow but not expecting much in MPG performance.
If you basing your decision on MPG you should consider a Prius, but then you severely limit your trailer choices. Happy trails!

You will more than likely see much better than 8.5 MPG, although stopping frequently for fuel is another issue to sort out.
We travel the country and I installed a 45 gallon below the bed rail fuel tank in the back of my truck. The OEM tank is 30 gallons give or take after I did a popular mod to it.
So, that gives me 75 gallons of fuel which enables me to stop when and where I want instead of when I have to.
There are other options for the newer trucks including 50 gallon tanks that replace the OEM tank. Adding a small tank in the bed is an option too. Looking at it now, I can go up to almost 1000 miles loaded with the 5th wheel and almost 1400 miles unloaded in my truck. That range has served us very well in the past and the auxiliary tank is one of my favorite additions to the truck.

'99L F350 7.3L 9200# 5er got 12.0mpg @65mph average hand calc last month's 1,900 mile trip. Wind affects our mileage more than anything. We had a tailwind that gave us 17.3mpg, and a headwind that gave us 8.6mpg
Return trip starts Wed, hoping for tailwinds, but we're all at the mercy of mother nature. Hoping someone using distilled water injection will pipe in

56Jeff,buying a newer vehicle for fuel economy reasons before your current one is wore out, isn't likely to lead to savings but actually costing you much more.Obviously there's a lot to it,to figure it out but if you dig deep into the math, you'll likely see it wont be cost effective.
