The deep pan is better, but not by a lot. The reason Ford had a deeper pan was for better gradeability. That is the ability to operate on steeper grades.

Aftermarket pans are larger, more expensive, and make the bottom of your van pretty. They do NOT help with cooling. Even the ones with fins or tubes.

It's a pan. It isn't rocket science.

Mark, I really appreciate your no nonsense approach. so thank you for that and your very helpful replies.

Gee, there is quite alot of confusion at my ford dealer as to the deep pan v shallow pan. according to them there is no indication
along with the part #/description as to 2wd or 4wd or any kind of depth. adding to that the fact that ford didn't make 4wd vans and so
the vin# for my vehicle is only going to point to a 2wd pan part I suspect. I'm leaning towards just putting my shallow pan back on and
getting the short filter as there is a restocking fee if I pick the wrong part.

if I move forward with the deep pan I've deduced that I need to order a pan for a ford superduty 4x4 truck of the 99-2003 era with 4r100
tranny. part number being F81Z7A194BA.

cross referenced here, as this looks deep...
https://www.fordpartsgiant.com/parts...-7a194-ba.html
and this doesn't(and is the part that comes up for the van)
https://www.fordpartsgiant.com/parts...bo;t=4at-4r100)
and having found this deep pan image and associated part # from another forum member(from their truck)...

part# on the box.doorman makes the 4r100 pans too but the motorcrafts are not that pricey if you shop around.i think i used fordpartsgiant

BC,

I apologize for misleading you on the pan you have. My mistake. As I think you've already figured out, you can probably go with which ever pan you prefer. If you plan on wheeling much, as Mark has stated the deeper pan would be better. If you don't plan on it, than the shallow pan should work fine, as it already has for how many ever miles it's been used on your rig.

Deep pan will be better in extreme angles, shallow pan gives more ground clearance. Think about what kind of off-roading you do and how much clearance & protection the vehicle has and decide accordingly.
