Intake Installation

Hey Guys,

Got my Weiand Intake the other day and finally getting around to installing it. My issue is on my engine, there are these two alignment dowels or pins that wont allow me to set the intake flush. I've tried to remove them, but they arent coming out. Am I supposed to file these down or cut them?

Any help would be appreciated!

Oh, its a 78, F250, 400.

Thanks in advance!

You are supposed to drill holes in the manifold. I assume there should have been some instructions to that regard in the box. Otherwise, quick google search will pull it up.

Okay, thanks. Its not anywhere in the instructions. Do you have to do this with Edelbrock?

From what I have read you do not have to with the edelbrock intake.

Those dowel pins should be to keep the tin intake gasket (often called a "turkey pan") in place. Don't drill out the dowel pins, you need them.

Drilling out the intake? I don't recall others saying they needed to do this, but here would be the best place to check:

I called Weiand and they said those pins should be removed. They recommended to not use the Valley Pan as well.

Weiand said remove them? Damn. If you're using a valley pan, those pins come in handy and are almost a necessity. And No, Edelbrock intake manifolds do not require you to remove the pins

Interesting, my bro drilled holes in the intake to seat the pins and it worked great.. Also I would not ditch that valley pan unless you must for installation, just for the heat factor, heat soak and subsequent boiling fuel etc....

Use an edelbrock paper gasket for a Cleveland and remove the pins. A good set of vice grips clipped on them, twisting and prying against the bottom of the vice grips worked for me.

Okay, I'll try that. Then should I fill those holes with RTV or anything or just leave them open?

I'm with Jake. I'd never install a non air gap intake manifold without a valley pan. I've personally seen twice where it was done. Fuel boiled in the float bowls. Even after installing a 1.5" phenolic spacer, fuel boiled.
